Amounts and conditions are personal and can change. Make a current calculation with SVB and Dienst Toeslagen.
Child benefit through SVB
After the birth is registered, the municipality passes the details to SVB. For a first child, you will usually receive a letter and the application will then be ready in Mijn SVB. If you already receive child benefit for another child, you usually do not need to apply again.
Check that the letter arrives and that the bank account number and family situation are correct. If you live or work across the border, other rules and coordination with foreign schemes may apply.
You may receive the child-related budget automatically or after applying
The child-related budget depends on income. Some households are contacted automatically, while others need to apply themselves. Use a current test calculation from Dienst Toeslagen and check both partners' qualifying income.
Report changes in income, partnership, housing or household composition promptly. An overpaid advance may be reclaimed later. Keep the calculation and decision so that you can check the assumptions used.
Childcare allowance requires you to keep records up to date
Childcare allowance has conditions for parents, childcare providers, the type of childcare, hours and payment. The childcare provider must be registered. Apply only on the basis of a real contract, and keep invoices and proof of payment.
Apply for childcare allowance within three months after childcare starts. Otherwise, you may miss out on money. Report changes in childcare hours, the hourly rate, income or end date in good time, and check advance payments during the year. Always use Dienst Toeslagen for the exact conditions.
Register early and decide on the basis of a contract
Childcare providers may have waiting lists. During pregnancy, explore locations, opening hours, settling-in policies and placement conditions. A tour and registration do not yet entitle you to an allowance.
Compare gross costs and expected allowances in several scenarios, including holidays, unused hours and extra days. Also consider a childminder, a different distribution of working days and informal childcare as alternatives. Decide only when the arrangements and costs are clearly set out in writing.
