Important information when buying a baby carrier

Differences in fabric and carrying positions

The four Flip settings are not four different positions on the body: two are inward-facing on the front, with different seat widths. The Adapt has mesh fabric and front, hip and back positions. Both the Flip and Omni 360 also have a forward-facing position. When a position can be used depends on the instructions and your child's development.

Would a baby wrap suit you better?

A baby wrap is also an option. Compare putting it on and adjusting it with a carrier, and have the fit demonstrated if needed. Check the usage limits of the wrap you choose.

In a wrap too, the nose and mouth must stay clear and visible and the chin must not drop onto the chest. Follow the carrying instructions and check the position while carrying.

Keep the airway in view at all times

VeiligheidNL recommends keeping the nose and mouth clear and making sure you can always see your baby's face. Take particular care with babies under four months because their chin can slump onto their chest.

Tighten the baby carrier enough to support the neck and back without restricting breathing. Check the position again after you start walking and when your baby falls asleep.

Carrying does not replace free movement or safe sleep

Take your baby out of the carrier regularly so they can move freely. For a longer sleep, place a sleeping baby on their back in their own cradle or cot.

According to VeiligheidNL, do not breastfeed while your baby is in the carrier and do not cycle with a baby in a carrier.

Best baby carriers: which suits your family?

The Infantino Flip has adjustable seat settings. The Adapt SoftFlex Mesh has mesh fabric and no outward-facing position. The Omni 360 does offer that position, within the limits of its manual. Try the carrier with your baby and with everyone who will regularly use it.

Selection criteria and sources

What we look for

  • Check the minimum weight, minimum height and permitted carrying position in the instructions.
  • Check that the nose and mouth always remain clear and visible and that the chin does not drop onto the chest.
  • Check the support for the neck, back and thighs against your child's stage of development.
  • Adjust the waist belt and shoulder straps for each regular wearer and walk around with the carrier for a few minutes.
  • Choose only carrying positions that the manufacturer permits for your child's current height and head control.
