Important information when buying a child bike seat
Does a front seat fit your bike?
Both examples are front-mounted and have the same maximum weight and height limits. Compare the mount, the space between you and the handlebars and strap operation. Do not simply use an adapter from another seat.
When can your baby use a bike seat?
VeiligheidNL advises waiting until your child can move from a crawling position into sitting independently. Staying upright after you place your baby in a sitting position is not the same thing. An age on the packaging does not replace this developmental requirement. Start with short rides once your child is ready.
What should a bike shop check?
Take your bike with you. Have the stem, cable clearance and steering range checked. A different handlebar design may need a separate adapter or may not fit the seat at all. For a rear seat too, the bike must allow the chosen mounting system and load.
What do you check before every ride?
Check the mounting, shoulder straps, foot straps and spoke guards. According to VeiligheidNL, a coat guard does not provide adequate spoke protection. Never leave a bike standing on its kickstand with your child in the seat, even with a wide stand.
Best child bike seats: which suits your family?
The ONE Mini offers five footrest positions; the Yepp 2 mini has an adjustable five-point harness. Both examples are front seats for up to 15 kilos and 93 cm. Your choice starts with a mount that fits your bike. If neither fits, have another front or rear seat assessed.
