Important information when buying a baby sleeping bag

Differences in warmth and sleeves

The Jollein Newborn Hydrofiel is sleeveless and has a TOG rating of 0.5. The Meyco Robin has filling and detachable sleeves, with a stated TOG rating of 2.5. The Meyco therefore retains more warmth.

The manufacturer does not state a separate TOG rating for the Meyco without sleeves. Follow the clothing guidance supplied with the sleeping bag you receive; do not choose based on the season alone.

Does a 60 cm sleeping bag fit a newborn?

Here, 60 cm is the length of the sleeping bag, not your baby's body length. An age range such as zero to three months is a guideline. Always check the fit on your child.

Your baby's head must not be able to slip through the neck opening, and the arm openings must not be too loose. The arms must be able to move freely. Do not buy a sleeping bag for your baby to grow into, and follow the manufacturer's size chart and fitting instructions.

Check the fit again after a growth spurt and after washing. A separate belt or another aid cannot make an oversized sleeping bag fit properly.

Keep checking the room and your child

TOG indicates how much warmth a fabric retains. VeiligheidNL advises choosing the thickness and whether sleeves are needed according to the room temperature. A TOG rating helps you choose, but does not tell you on its own what clothing your baby needs.

Place your baby on their back, keep the bed empty and prevent your child from getting too warm. Follow the manufacturer's current guidance on clothing and layers.

Best baby sleeping bags: which suit you?

There is no single best newborn sleeping bag for every baby. If you want a thin, sleeveless version, you can look at the Jollein. For more warmth and detachable sleeves, there is the Meyco. Both are 60 cm long. Choose based on fit and room temperature first; extra features are not automatically needed.

Selection criteria and sources

What we look for

  • Check that the head cannot pass through the neck opening and that the armholes are not too loose.
  • Choose the size based on your child's body length and follow the manufacturer's size chart.
  • Match the TOG rating and clothing to the bedroom temperature.
  • Choose a model without a hood, and check the zip, seams and loose parts.
  • Consider whether you need a second suitable sleeping bag for wash days and accidents.
