Important information when buying a thermometer

Differences between the three measurements

The OMRON measures body temperature. The TP50 measures room temperature and humidity. The Philips measures bath water and room temperature. The room and bath thermometers are not suitable for checking a fever. A combined thermometer can replace two separate environmental thermometers.

Taking a young baby's temperature

According to Thuisarts.nl, a rectal measurement gives the most reliable temperature. If your baby is under three months old and you measure 38 degrees or more, call your GP or the out-of-hours GP service immediately.

Checking bath water

VeiligheidNL recommends bath water at 37 degrees. Mix hot and cold water before measuring. Stay with your baby and keep hold of them, even when the thermometer shows the desired temperature.

Best thermometers: which suit you?

Selection criteria and sources

What we look for

  • For checking a fever, choose a thermometer suitable for rectal use.
  • For a bath thermometer, check that it is actually designed for use in water.
  • A room thermometer does not need an app or Wi-Fi.
  • Do not count devices twice: a bath with a built-in thermometer or a combined thermometer may make a separate bath thermometer unnecessary.
