Important information when buying a baby monitor

Differences in connection and functions

The separate parent units work without Wi-Fi. The DVM200M has a camera that you can pan and tilt from the parent unit. The Philips also provides access over the internet; the camera on this model cannot be moved remotely.

After the initial Wi-Fi set-up, SenseIQ also works without Wi-Fi on the Philips parent unit and does not require a paid subscription. Cry interpretation needs internet access and is free for the first 90 days after activation. After that, you can choose to take out a paid Zoundream subscription. Philips states that relevant software updates will be available for up to two years after purchase.

Privacy with a connected baby monitor

The Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) notes that smart devices can collect sensitive information and that the risk is greater for children. Before buying, check which images and data are stored, where they are stored and how long updates will remain available.

Use a unique password, enable two-step verification if possible and install security updates. Delete the account and stored data when you sell or dispose of the device.

Position and range

Place the device securely near your baby and keep cords out of reach. Test the connection with doors closed in the places where you usually sit. The range measured outdoors by the manufacturer may be shorter indoors.

Best baby monitors: which one suits you?

There is no single best baby monitor for everyone. If you only want to hear your baby, an audio model may be enough. If you also want video without an app, look for a dedicated screen. If you also want to view your baby on your phone, consider the internet connection, privacy and any subscriptions. Above all, compare the features you want to use.

Selection criteria and sources

What we look for

  • Test the range and how it handles interference in your own home.
  • Make a deliberate choice between a local connection and internet access.
  • For an app-based model, check the update policy, support period and account security.
  • Place the camera, cords and adapters out of the child's reach.
  • Treat sleep, breathing and temperature notifications as an aid to be used according to the instructions, not as medical measurements.
